N EW DELHI: Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick users are at risk as a new cryptocurrency malware is affecting these devices. According to a report by AFTVnews, users who have tweaked the developer settings of their Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Sticks in order to download third-party apps on the device are at risk of getting attacked by a cryptocurrency mining malware.
The report also claims that the malware named ADB.Miner installs itself on the two Amazon devices disguised as an app called ‘test’ and it comes under the package name ‘com.google.time.time.’ Once the process of installation is complete, then the cryptocurrency miner activates and starts slowing down the devices. The malware then also stops the video playback on devices and displays a notification saying ‘test’ along with an Android icon on the screen.
The list of apps that are carrying this malware is still unknown. However, it is expected that the apps which allows users to play pirated movies and TV shows on Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick can be the culprit.
Here's what you can do
In case your device is already compromised by the malware then the report also has some recommendations for you. The first thing to do is factory reset your Amazon device immediately. However, if you don’t wish to do that then download an app called Total Commander from the Amazon app store. This app will help you to uninstall the malware stored on your device.Recently, global IT security firm Quick Heal revealed that two new new sophisticated Android Banking trojan viruses have surfaced online which are exploiting mobile users' behaviour in India to gain access to their confidential data.
